Nesta does nothing. When her father is killed right in front of her, Nesta does nothing. Her humanity buried, all she can do is drown her sorrows in taverns and drag strangers to her bed. No one gets close to her without getting cut. What happens when she becomes the only person who can save the Night Court?
Rating: 4.5 / 5
Sarah J.Maas honestly has my heart. This fantasy world is unbeatable, as are all the characters. Can't wait for the sequels to come out.
We had big 'save the world' plot drama without it tripping over itself - cough cough 'House of Earth and Blood'. There were clear influences from 'Breaking Dawn', 'Divergent' and 'The Hunger Games' to name a few, but this was done tastefully to good effect. The prose was addictive, and the romantic pacing was never off-beat for a second. And yes, every page was required.
Unsurprisingly, it is Nesta who takes the spotlight. Her character is complex, flawed, powerful and just so interesting to read. The trauma she undergoes and gradually recovers from is depicted head-on, beautifully. In the Acknowledgements of the novel it is inferred that her character arc was LOOSELY inspired by J.Maas' own struggles, which is perhaps what allowed Nesta to touch me so much.
My only complaint would be that the girl-power vibes got a little too cringey . As a bisexual feminist I wouldn't usually be critiquing a band of female warriors. However, their confession of their trauma and how they are going to heal together (just when we think they may die, I might add) gave me too many flashbacks to GCSE Drama monologues about mental health (if you know you know).
