'The Power' by Naomi Alderman

Rating: 3 / 5

My plot intro:

Every woman in the world discovers that they have the power to create electricity, which sparks from a skein in their collarbone.

A wannabe journalist, a politician, a gang leader’s daughter and a runaway will all try to turn this new world to their advantage.

Review:

I read ‘The Power’ as part of my prep for English Literature A-Level, and despite my lowish rating I enjoyed it more than most other dystopias I have read.

The concept was simple but interesting. Sexism is completely subverted; men are banned to leave the house without a woman to escort them, male writers consider using female pseudonyms, and everything that women in the present day suffer is inflicted upon men. In this way Alderman powerfully critiques the misogyny that today’s women put up with.

‘The Power’ one of the few multiple POV novels (it had four-ish) I’ve read where I’ve felt that each of the characters have been properly explored.

However, I could not give ‘The Power’ a higher rating because it sadly failed to excite me. Yes, there was a couple of plot twists, but I didn’t at all find myself thinking about the story when I wasn’t reading it. It will be the concept I remember, not the storyline.
