Plot introduction by me:
Patrick Bateman is the man you catch a glimpse of in the street and instantly fall in love with. He’s got it all: the looks of a model, intelligence but in that appealing shy boy way, a hefty pay check, and excellent taste in anything clothes related. He is also the man that you have no chance of surviving once you’re in his apartment. What lies in between these two men?
To understand what made this novel a classic, one must look past the gory and graphic images we associate with the title ‘serial killer’.
What made it a classic is how Easton Ellis https://www.breteastonellis.com took the most prized thing in our society: success (at least the popular depiction of it) and painted it a living hell. The point is very well made; and is best explained in the author’s words: it’s “a lifestyle being sold as life” -forgive me if that’s not an exact quotation.
So if you’re looking for a book that will really get you thinking, discussing, researching, reading and watching around it -all of which I have done, ‘American Pscyho’ is for you.
But if you’re in fact looking for a pacy, colourful read, I would not in fact recommend this novel. The descriptions and plot lines are formulaic, and whilst this was the most honest way that Easton Ellis could write Pat Bateman, it did not help to make each page pop. *Alsopleasedonotreadthiswhenyou arehavingabaddayisdoesnothelpIamspeakingfromexperience!*
