My Plot Introduction:

Catalia knows she's found a life partner in the warlord Griffin, who managed to capture her and then her heart.

But can she trust him with her true identity and what has been prophesied?

Griffin wants to unite the realms under a single ruler, but that means allowing his soul mate to go on dangerous quests without him, whilst he can only pray that she'll return alive.

And together with their loyal team, Cat and Griffin will fight horrific enemies in battles to the death if it means they can get an audience with the royal family of a neighbouring realm.

Can they come out of it all alive?

Rating: 5 / 5

When a friend recommended this series, they warned me that it goes downhill after the first novel. My rating here is testament to how vehemently I disagree!

It opened like a fire cracker (domestic violence trigger warning) and the pace never dropped.

We had all the character development for side characters that book one was lacking, and Bouchet even managed to flesh out minor side romances.

Speaking of romance, Bouchet did an exceptional job with Cat and Griffin. I get incredibly tired of authors creating pointless love triangles or fatal miscommunications just to try and resuscitate the romance. We had none of that and Cat and Griffin were alive and fiery as ever!

In book one of this series ('Promise of Fire'), I'd been wanting more Greek mythology vibes and gosh did Bouchet deliver. We had Cyclopes, direct involvement from the Olympian gods, centaurs, the coin to cross the river Styx, and even Stymphalian birds. All of which were seamlessly woven into the prose.

'Breath of Fire' was predominantly action based and the fight scenes did NOT disappoint. Granted, it was stressful thinking that your characters were about to die every other second, but the way I could picture everything unfold in my head was truly magical.
