My plot intro:
Lanny is different to other children. He’s closer to the earth somehow, infinitely older than his years yet younger too. His mother used to act but now writes dark crime fiction, and his father commutes into London for a seemingly pointless job. Dead Papa Toothwort has watched the village for centuries, and Lanny is his favourite. Then Lanny disappears.
Of course, Porter's concept is fascinatingly unique. However, he takes until about halfway to really pick up the pace, which is when I started LOVING the book :)
I even read it into the early hours of the morning because I just couldn’t put it down (it got amazingly disturbing towards the end -Porter's imagination knows no bounds.)
This novel perfectly depicts the beautifies and flaws of English Village life in a form unlike anything I’ve ever read before.
“What if we, the too-polite sons and daughters of these old fuckers, actually started picking them up on their warped world-view, on their grotesque self-interest and petty entitlement? What if I did murder Mrs Larton?”
